Dear Miriam
Junior Writer - Job Number 363566
Thank you very much for your interest in the position of junior writer and my apologies for taking this long to respond. We had an enormous number of applications for the role and I regret to inform you that we won't be proceeding further with yours at this stage. As this process has indicated, staff jobs in journalism are highly sought after and this is not an easy career to enter. However, many successful writers do get a start in journalism as contributors and freelancers - getting published eventually opens doors. I am always on the lookout for freelance contributors to the magazine, both as regular writers and for one-off ideas, and I would welcome your suggestions for stories in the future.
Thanks again for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you in the future,

Dear Miriam
Thank you for your application for the position of Features Editor.
As you can imagine, we received a lot of applications for this role, and so after careful consideration, have decided not to take your application to the next stage, on this occasion.
Thank you for applying though, and I wish you all the best for the future.
Very best wishes

Tasteful but Harsh
Hi Miriam,
I'm emailing about your pitch for work. I'm really sorry, but I've offered the work to another author. Your pitch was fantastic, your work on the last guide was great, and I would have no hesitation whatsoever in commissioning you. It's just unfortunate for you that there's another keen and available author whose work is equally excellent, and she happens to live in XXX, which means a significant saving on research costs. I need to consider the book's profitability as well as its quality.
I haven't actually contracted XXX yet, but she's informally accepted my offer. If something unforeseeable happens and I'm suddenly looking for another author, I'll be in touch. But I wanted to let you know this news now rather than keep you hanging.
It's hard to know whether to deliver this news in person or by email. I'm more than happy to talk about it over coffee or something if you'd like to.
Thanks again for your pitch, and I'm sorry it hasn't worked out the way you'd hoped. I wish I could have contracted both of you.

And we're back!
Job harmony has meant this blog has been on the silent side for the last 18 months but I am happy to say that the hunt for gainful employment is on again. The feelers are out, the cover letters are being signed and I am ready to scrape the Saturday papers clean of their every last media/ comms/ arts/ advertising position just to bring you the lamest, most uncreative rejection letters in the business (and perhaps a new job for me somewhere in between a "...your application has not been successful" and "...we'll keep your details for future reference"). Here's hoping.

Hi Miriam,
Thanks very much for your application. Unfortunately this role has now been filled. I would however like to keep your details for future reference and should we find another suitable role I will contact you personally.
I would also encourage you to regularly check out our jobs on Seek (www.seek.com.au) and Jobnet (www.jobnet.com.au) and to apply to anything else of interest. We have a large turnover of roles so you will find new jobs are being added regularly. All the best with your job search and please feel free to contact me at any time.
Kind regards,

Hi Miriam
Thank you for your application and thanks also for clarifying your visa status in terms of your application. It was nice to talk to you (albeit briefly!) the other day.
Unfortunately I must advise that on this occasion, your application has not been successful. We were fortunate to have a very strong pool of candidates for this role, a number of whom have commissioning experience and greater regional knowledge of Italy and Malta than yourself. This was the main reason we chose to not pursue your application further on this occasion.
Thank you again for taking the time to apply. If you would like more specific feedback on your application please don't hesitate to contact me.
Best wishes

A New Week, A New Rejection
Dear Miriam,
Thank you very much for your application for the position of Feature Writer.
While your application possessed some very interesting qualities, unfortunately you were unsuccessful at this time.
Thank you again for your interest in the position, and good luck with the search for a new job.

Today I was offered a job, but in the interest of keeping up this blog I declined. That said, the job was as a receptionist at Ashley & Martin, Australia's leading hairloss treatment company. Providing natural hair regrowth is their specialty.
Obviously I need a bloody job, but dealing with a never ending stream of men with varying degrees of inventive comb-over is not my idea of career progression.

To tell you the truth, I can't even remember what job this was!
Dear Miriam

Rejected by Phone
Today I was rejected by phone. In wonderful 'don't call us we'll call you' style I finally got an answer after four attempts .. you have to love begging for rejection. Apparently despite interviewing well and 'fitting the image' for this pretty basic retail position, there was some 'seriously qualified' candidates with some 'serious experience' who were better suited ..

Hi Miriam
I'm just clearing out my inbox and it looks like I never replied to this email! If so, I'm really sorry. I really appreciated the fantastic response, and thank you so much for your interest. I have now hired someone but all of the candidates were excellent so it was a tough choice.
I'm really sorry for the horribly delayed response.
Take care

Dear Miriam,
Thank you very much for applying for the position of Casual Proposal Writer. Unfortunately, I do not have good news.
I received an unanticipated response both in terms of quality and quantity to the newspaper and Internet advertisements, which made the selection process for candidates to interview very competitive.
Miriam, I know that you met the criteria in many ways. There were however, applicants who were an even closer match to the position. I would not like you to see this as a rejection of your background by any means. It reflects, instead, the competitive nature of the field in response to this advertisement.
Because I value your interest, I would like to retain your CV on file for a period of six months in the event that an appropriate position becomes available again. Please let me know if you do not wish us to keep your CV on record.
Thank you once again for your interest and I wish you every success in your job search endeavours.
